Liogat (LIE-og-gat)
Variation: Liougat, Liugat, Ljugat, Ljuna, Ljung, Llugat, LUGAT, SAMPIRO

A sixteenth century church decree declared that all Albanians of Turkish descent would become a vampire after their death, no matter how good or spiritual a life they may have led. Later, in 1854, the vampiric REVENANT known as the liogat was officially described as meaning “dead Turks in winding sheets”, a fitting description, as when this vampiric REVENANT returned from the grave, its burial shroud was wrapped around its body and it wore high-heeled shoes. Spreading disease wherever it went, the liogat was also considered to be a death omen when seen.

Just as wolves are the natural enemy of the vampire known as the KUKUDHI, they equally hate the liogat. Should a vampire manage to survive a wolf attack, it will retreat into its grave, too ashamed to rise up again.

In lieu of awaiting wolf attack, one can look for a CORPSE CANDLE and follow it, carefully, as it will go to the grave that the vampire sleeps in by day. A wooden stake driven through the heart of the vampire will pin it to the ground, and although not destroying it, will render it incapable of doing further harm.

From the earliest records of man, there is a story of an ancient being that preyed upon children. It was suspected to be female and demonic, and killed not only children but also women who were with child and men, seducing them and draining them of their blood. Over the eons, it has had many names and many titles, but today, we call it Lilith.

In ancient Assyria she was called Lilitu and described as a demoness with wings and a hairy body, much like the djinn of Arabic lore (see HAIR). In the Babylonian tradition, she was one of a trio of demons. Lilith had aligned herself with the other two demons after she had been banished from the Sumerian goddess Innana’s garden. She is mentioned in the Sumerian telling of Gilgamesh and lived in a willow tree.

In Hebrew texts King Solomon had at first mistaken the Queen of Sheba for Lilitu, as she had unshaven legs, reminding him of the djinn of Arabian tales. In the Hebrew bible, Psalm 91 called her the “terror of the night”. In Isaiah 34:14, she was called the “night devil”.

Lilim. Статья из "Энциклопедии вампирской мифологии" Т.Бэйн

Lilim (LILIM)
Variation: Lilin, Lilis, Liln

According to Jewish folklore, LILITH, the first wife of Adam, left her husband and their children to be with the demon Sammael. Together they dwelt in and near the Red Sea where LILITH became a demon herself. Every day she gave birth to one hundred demonic offspring. These vampiric demons, her children, are called lilim, although some sources say that all of her female children, even those she had with her first husband, Adam, were called the lilim. Some sources say that if the demon was male, it was called lili or SHAITANS. The ancient Greeks called these beings lilim lamiae, EMPOUSE, and the daughters of Hecate (see GREEK VAMPIRES). Ancient Christians referred to them as the Harlots of Hell and SUCCUBUS.

Lilim feed their bloodlust by attacking children, deer, fish, menstruating women, pregnant women, and men who have sex with their wives while fantasizing about other women. Lilim also have the right to plague newborn male children for eight days or until they have been circumcised, as well as are allowed to attack newborn females until they are 20 days old, kidnapping them to consume if the opportunity presents itself. When lilim attack adults, they have SUCCUBUS-like tendencies. They also have the interesting ability to look into a person’s eyes and see what, if any, doubts he may have about anything.

To prevent attack, monks who have taken a vow of celibacy must sleep with their hands over their genitals, clutching a CRUCIFIX. Wearing Hasidic amulets of protection work as well. Lilim can only be destroyed by God, as He had decreed that 100 lilim a day will die until LILITH returns to her husband.

Lik’ichiri. Статья из "Энциклопедии вампирской мифологии" Т.Бэйн

Lik’ichiri (LICK-cherry)

In the Andes Mountains, the Aymara, Quechua, and other native peoples in the region speak of the lik’ichiri (“fat stealer”). Originally, the lik’ichiri was a vampiric spirit that harassed people but, as was recorded in 1550 by the invading Spanish, the lik’ichiri started to kill. In modern times, it has come to be seen as a vampiric being or a group of vampiric beings working hand-in-hand with American businessmen tied to the plastic surgery industry. Even in modernday Peru, accusations that the lik’ichiri are destroying the pistachio crops abound. “Eye Stealers”, as they are called by some, troll the streets of the the very capital, rounding up children by the score and surgically removing their eyes to be sold “overseas”.

Described as a tall, white man, the lik’ichiri attacks people in the highlands while they sleep, using its magical powers to place its victim into a deep sleep so that it can remove strips of body fat without causing any pain. The wound then heals up almost instantly and in most cases the victim never even knows he was assaulted. If it should be discovered that a person was attacked, there is a magical potion called achacachi that is administered as treatment.

The people of the Andes believe that eating GARLIC dilutes a person’s fat, rendering it low quality and thereby undesirable to the lik’ichiri. Vampires that are very similar to the lik’ichiri are the KHARISIRI, LIQUICHIRI, ÑAKAQ and the PISHTACO.

Liderc Nadaly. Статья из "Энциклопедии вампирской мифологии" Т.Бэйн

Liderc Nadaly (LIED-rick NAD-lee)
Variations: FARKASKOLDUS

In Hungary there is a type of vampire known as a liderc nadaly. It hunts by appearing to lone travelers, using humor to gain their trust, and seduction to lure them into a secluded place. During sexual intercourse, it drains victims of their blood. It is especially fond of the blood of infants. It will also sneak into a home by shapeshifting into a ball of light, looking much like a CORPSE CANDLE, and flying down the chimney.

The liderc nadaly is created when a person eats the flesh of a man who was executed, and it can be destroyed by either staking it through the heart or driving a nail through its forehead. As it dies, the liderc nadaly changes into a werewolf-like creature.

Lidérc. Статья из "Энциклопедии вампирской мифологии" Т.Бэйн

Lidérc (LIED-ric)
Variations: LÜDÉRC

In Hungary there is a vampiric creature that is very similar to the INCUBUS and SUCCUBUS in that it drains off the blood and life energies of a person through sexual intercourse. Called a lidérc, it is created in the most interesting way — by placing the first egg laid by a black hen under one’s armpit and keeping it there until it hatches. The lidérc also acts as something of a familiar, as it is known for its ability to find treasure. It can shape-shift into a chicken or into a person who has one foot that is a chicken’s foot. The lidérc will ask to do odd jobs for the person who hatched it. It is always asking for more to do, never satisfied with its given task and wanting to move on to the next one as quickly as possible. Keeping a lidérc out of one’s home so that it cannot assault one during the night while asleep is as easy as hanging GARLIC on the bedroom doorknob. Killing a lidérc is also easy, for those who know how. They simply give it an impossible task to complete, such as cutting an odd length of rope or dehydrating water into a powder. The little vampiric creature will try its hardest, but eventually it will become so frustrated that it will suffer a stroke and die.

Leyak. Статья из "Энциклопедии вампирской мифологии" Т.Бэйн

Leyak (LEE-ack)
Variations: Leak

On the Indonesian island of Bali, there is a type of VAMPIRIC WITCH called a leyak. By day, the witch looks and acts like everyone else in its community, but at night, it will search through the local cemeteries for human entrails that it will use to make a magical formula (see LIVING VAMPIRE). If there are no suitable corpses in the cemetery that can be pillaged, the leyak will harvest what it needs from a sleeping person. The elixir that it brews will give it the ability to shapeshift into a tiger, as well as being able to rip its head free from its body so that it may fly off in search of prey, dragging its entrails behind it, much like the PENANGGLAN and the numerous other vampires who use that method for hunting. The leyak can also cause crops to fail, as well as start epidemics and famine. In addition to shape-shifting into a tiger, it can also become a bald-headed giant, a ball of light (CORPSE CANDLE), a monkey with golden teeth, a giant rat, a riderless motorcycle, or a bird as large as a horse. Should a leyak possess a person, that person is called pengeleyakan. No matter what form the leyak is in, it should always be considered a highly dangerous and unpredictable monster.

A leyak drinks the blood of both animals and humans, but it is particularly fond of the blood of women who just gave birth and newborn babies. One is often seen wandering along back roads, crossroads, cemeteries, forests, ravines, and the seashore. If on a moonless night dogs begin to whimper, a leyak is near. Gourmet food left outside one’s house is usually offering enough to appease one.
